# Opinion: India’s new AI compute tender is a welcome step; easy booking for startups will decide its success

Up to 10,000 more AI compute units can help Indian builders. Clear prices, simple sign-up and public usage data would make the pool even more useful.

**In short:** We welcome C-DAC’s tender for up to 10,000 more AI compute units under the IndiaAI Mission. Shared, subsidised compute helps Indian startups and researchers who cannot buy clusters of their own. The pool will be most useful if booking is simple, prices are clear and usage is reported openly.

## Why this is good news

C-DAC’s tender seeks up to 10,000 AI compute units, in clusters of at least 512 units in Indian data centres, with bids due by 29 October.[^1] It adds to more than 38,000 chips WION reports are already onboarded under the IndiaAI Mission.[^3]

For a startup in Bengaluru or a research lab in Guwahati, renting a large GPU cluster abroad is expensive and slow. A national pool, hosted in India, lowers that barrier. Keeping data in India also matters for sectors like health and finance.[^2]

## Credit where it is due

The tender is specific: it sets cluster sizes, clear dates and a minimum per site.[^1] That clarity helps providers plan and should help the units come online faster. It is also good that the compute is open to startups, academia and industry, not only government.[^2][^3]

## What would make it even better

- **Simple booking.** A clear online process, with short waits for small teams, would help the most people.
- **Clear prices.** Publishing the subsidised hourly rates for each type of unit lets founders plan budgets.
- **Open usage data.** Regular public reports on how many units are used, and by whom, would show what is working and build confidence.

## A note for builders

If you plan to use IndiaAI compute, prepare now: estimate how many GPU hours you need, check that your code runs on the accelerators offered, and keep your data handling ready for India-only hosting.

## Our view

Compute is one of the main inputs for AI work, and this tender adds to India’s shared supply. How easily people can use it will decide its impact. We look forward to seeing the bids on 30 October and the pool grow.
