Research note
Research note: Asian chip stocks fall after Broadcom’s Hock Tan likens AI investing to a casino
How we checked what Hock Tan said and the market moves, and why we name other causes of the fall too.
What we set out to check
What Hock Tan said, where, how markets moved, and whether his remark was the only cause.
What we found
- Two outlets report the casino comparison from a Singapore event on 12 October. Neither gives a full transcript.
- TradingKey gives closing figures and names other causes.
Numbers that differ
StartupFortune says the Kospi fell “more than 6%”; TradingKey gives a 5.46% close. The first is the intraday move, the second the close. We use the close and mention both.
Labels we chose and why
- Reported for the remark, carried by two outlets.
- Unconfirmed for exact market figures and the revenue forecast, each from one source.
- We did not write that the remark “caused” the fall, because analysts named several reasons.
What we could not verify
- Tan’s exact words.
- Official exchange data, which we did not check directly.
What we searched
- Hock Tan casino AI remark
- Kospi falls SK Hynix October 13 2026
- Broadcom AI revenue forecast 2028
