Research note: Mistral Large 4 enters preview with 1 trillion parameters, open weights due this month

What we set out to check

The release date, size, price and open-weights plan for Mistral Large 4, and how much of the coverage is Mistral’s own claim.

What we found

• Mistral’s announcement dates the public API preview to 6 October 2026 and lists 1 trillion total and 52 billion active parameters.
• List prices on Mistral’s page: $1.36 per million input tokens and $4.18 per million output tokens.
• Mistral says open weights will come by the end of October; VentureBeat reports a 27 October target.

Numbers that differ between sources

• Active parameters: eWeek and VentureBeat cite 49 billion from launch material; Mistral’s page says 52 billion. We use Mistral’s page and note the difference.
• Training GPUs: VentureBeat reports about 4,000 GPUs; Mistral’s page says 3,800. We use Mistral’s figure and label it a company claim.
• Context window: eWeek reports 1 million tokens, but Mistral’s page does not state it, so our model card says “Not stated by Mistral”.

Labels we chose and why

• Benchmark scores are Company claims: they come from Mistral and were not on independent leaderboards when we checked.
• The launch discount is Unconfirmed: only one report we read carries it.

What we could not verify

• The open-weights licence.
• Whether pricing differs for customers in India.
