Research note
Research note: Sierra and Meta propose an open standard for personal AI agents that deal with businesses
How we checked what Personal Agent Protocol covers, who backs it, and whether its first specification has been published yet.
What we set out to check
What the protocol does, who is behind it, and whether the specification is already public.
What we found
- Sierra’s post explains discovery, OAuth sessions and read-only or write access.
- Six partners are named. Meta is described as co-developer; we found no direct Meta quote.
Numbers that differ
One newsletter said version 0.1 was published on 6 October. Sierra’s own post says the v0.1 specification will come “later this month”, and The Next Web agrees. We follow the official post.
Labels we chose and why
- Confirmed for what Sierra states. The protocol is a proposal, so the story describes how it is “meant to work”.
What we could not verify
- The licence and governance of the standard.
- How widely it will be adopted.
What we searched
- Personal Agent Protocol Sierra Meta
- Personal Agent Protocol OAuth Walmart Shopify Stripe
- Personal Agent Protocol v0.1 specification
Every source we read
| Source | Used? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sierra: Introducing Personal Agent Protocol | USED | Official announcement by Bret Taylor and Clay Bavor. Used for how it works, partners and timing. |
| The Next Web | USED | Independent coverage. Confirms the spec is still to come and notes the separate Visa effort. |
| AI Weekly alert | NOT USED | Said v0.1 was already published, which the official post does not support. |
