Research note
Research note: Amazon is in talks to buy AI start-up Decart for about $7 billion, the Wall Street Journal reports
How we checked the report of Amazon’s talks with Decart and why we label it unconfirmed.
What we set out to check
Whether more than one outlet had confirmed Amazon’s reported talks with Decart, what Decart does, and what both companies said.
What we found
- Reuters and Calcalist both attribute the talks to the Wall Street Journal and its unnamed sources.
- Neither company confirmed the talks; Amazon declined to comment and Decart did not respond to Reuters.
- Background facts on Decart’s funding appear in both outlets.
Numbers that differ
Reuters gives Decart’s May valuation as “nearly $4 billion” and Calcalist as “about $4 billion”. Calcalist puts Anthropic’s earlier valuation at $6–7 billion; Reuters, citing Bloomberg, says $6 billion. We give only the $7 billion reported for Amazon.
Labels we chose and why
- Unconfirmed for the talks: one original report.
- Reported for background carried by two outlets.
What we could not verify
- The WSJ article itself, which is paywalled.
- Any statement from Amazon or Decart.
What we searched
- Amazon Decart acquisition talks $7 billion
- Decart funding Radical Ventures Nvidia valuation
