Research note: Microsoft president Brad Smith calls for global AI safety rules and says the UK is best placed to lead
How we checked what Brad Smith said in his BBC interview about global AI rules.
What we set out to check
What Brad Smith said, where he said it, and which proposals he made, using at least two independent write-ups of the interview.
What we found
- TechCrunch and Fox News, with Reuters contributing, both report a BBC interview published on 12 October.
- Both list independent evaluations, incident reporting and an emergency brake among his proposals.
- TechCrunch gives the UK-versus-Brussels quote; Fox News gives the washing-machine quote.
Numbers that differ
Fox News’s headline compares AI rules with milk, while the quote in its text refers to a washing machine. We use the quoted wording.
Labels we chose and why
- Reported for what Smith said, carried by two outlets.
- Unknown for any government response.
What we could not verify
- The full BBC audio.
- Each quote against the original recording.
