Research note
Research note: Fed’s Beige Book finds firms in five of 12 districts cut staff or delayed hiring after investing in AI
How we checked what the Fed’s October 2026 Beige Book says about AI and hiring, district by district.
What we set out to check
What the October Beige Book says about AI and jobs, which districts said it, and what it says about employment overall.
What we found
- The national summary links reduced staffing, delayed hiring and lower expected job creation to AI investment.
- Cleveland, Chicago, Minneapolis and New York describe AI reducing or slowing hiring; Atlanta describes wider AI use.
- Philadelphia and St. Louis describe AI as a source of demand.
Numbers that differ
24/7 Wall St. says five districts; the national summary does not give a number in the passage we read. We label the count unconfirmed.
Labels we chose and why
- Confirmed for quotes from the Fed’s own report.
- Unconfirmed for the five-district count.
What we could not verify
- The Dallas and San Francisco district passages, which we could not read in full.
What we searched
- Beige Book October 2026 AI hiring
- Beige Book 20261014
