Question

What we set out to check

The new target, how much is committed, who is leading and why the number changed.

Findings

What we found

Both outlets cite the Financial Times for the $20 billion target and the Wall Street Journal for the $11 billion committed. Forbes adds the MGX consortium and the compute option. Neither has a comment from OpenAI.

Discrepancies

Numbers that differ

The valuation was reported at $1.4 trillion and later $1.25 trillion. We use the later figure and mention both.

Method

Labels we chose and why

Reported for the target, commitments and valuation. Unconfirmed for the MGX role and compute option, from Forbes only. Reasons for the cut are the outlets' suggestions, not facts.

Open questions

What we could not verify

The FT and WSJ reports themselves, which are paywalled.
